Pittsburgh , United States – February 15, 2018 —
The level of influenza sweeping across the United States in the early months of 2018 have already reached levels previously thought unobtainable by early Center for Disease Control forecasts last year. When the Swine flu, also known as Swine-Origin Influenza Virus (S-OIV), inundated countries across the globe in 2003, 60.9 million Americans alone ended up contracting the virus with another 275,756 being hospitalized. Approximately 13,587 of those were killed, and these figures from the CDC do not even include deaths caused indirectly by influenza as the virus weakens the immune system, leaving it more susceptible to other hostile pathogens. While the flu itself is historically not often as deadly to healthy adults versus more susceptible populations such as seniors and children, the complications that can arise from having the flu, such as pneumonia often are. In 2017 alone, CDC estimates put 31% of all deaths relating to the flu as being caused by secondary complications such as pneumonia. Healthy adults that often work in adverse conditions are at even greater risk, as fighting through the illness because you are still young can often prove deadly.
“Obviously there is widespread activity from this year’s flu season across the United States. It’s something that hasn’t happened in over 13 years,” said Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg. “There are over 100 people a day who die from the flu in the U.S. and we need to provide an easier way for people to get help.”
This year’s Influenza B strain is also exceptionally deadly due to the pathogen mutating unexpectedly, rendering this year’s flu vaccine even more ineffective than previous years. And while there is not anything that can be done to prevent the arrival of flu season every winter, practicing proper diet and hygiene goes a long way towards combating the virus to keep you and your family healthy.
