Beach erosion is an issue that has plagued communities all over the globe for centuries. While tourism continues to be one of the biggest driving economic resources for many countries, beaches are valuable for recreation and wildlife as well.

Swahili Beach Resort, a luxurious 5 star resort in Diani Beach, Kenya has been plagued by beach erosion issues. 5 years ago, the Swahili Beach Resort asked the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for permission to find an artificial solution to their beach erosion issues. NEMA granted permission for the resort to explore ways to find a solution, on the condition that any method that was used would not harm the environment. The resort opted to try a method that was used in Zanzibar that involved putting up a gabion made up of mangrove timber. While the method was successful in Zanzibar, it failed to work in Diani Beach. They then learned of The Sandsaver, a US based technology that had previous success.

The Sandsaver™, a rotationally molded beach erosion barrier with previous proven success in protecting and restoring beach front property, has recently been showing a number of positive signs as a beach erosion solution in its first ocean based install on the eastern coast of Africa, on the Indian Ocean. In just 6 weeks since the installation of the Sandsaver at the Swahili Beach Resort, the system has accreted over 20,000 cubic yards of sand while increasing the width profile of the beach as much as 100 feet in some areas of the beach. The Sandsaver works in two ways, by breaking down the energy of the wave when it crashes against the heavy duty module and then allows the water to travel through the large end of the tapered opening where the water speeds up and is discharged out of a smaller opening, allowing for the water and sand content to be placed onto the beach. The water must retreat thru the smaller openings to return to the surf, thus the sand is given time to settle onto the beach side of the modules. Eventually, the module becomes buried by the sand accretion on both sides of the unit and the beach gains are realized on both sides of the modules. The Sandsaver is a patented product produced by rotational molding supplier, Granger Plastics Company, a Middletown Ohio-based plastics company producing a wide-variety of rotomolded products for a plethora of industries ranging from Aerospace to Waste Management. In 2013, a third party engineering firm issued a final report on Sandsaver’s Lake Michigan installation that stated “the results of the shoreline in response to the Sandsaver system are unambiguously positive” and that “beach volume gains did not just occur behind the Sandsaver modules, as some had anticipated. Tangible gains in bottom elevation were witnessed as much as 50 feet in front of the Sandsaver system into the lake.” The report also said that the Sandsaver system “does not generate adjacent negative impacts associated with shore-normal and impermeable structures. The Sandsaver modules’ permeability and placement in a shore-parallel orientation demonstrated no negative impacts to adjacent stretches of beach”.

Granger Plastics Company recently released its second installment of its Sandsaver beach erosion solution video series, as the recently installed system in Africa continues to show positive results of sand accumulation and increasing beach width. The once rocky, coral covered beach front was once a deterrent to guests and those who frequented the beach, but recently with the success being witnessed by the Sandsaver installation, tourists are enjoying a sand-filled beachfront.
